Welcomes and farewells

The last few weeks have seen a quite a lot of staff movement within the HPI group. We said farewell to the six summer scholars, who handed in their final reports Friday, 29-Jan. Farewell also to Dr. Jian (Andrew) Zhang - who has taken up a tenure track position at the CSIRO lab in Marsfield Sydney.

We welcome two new staff to the machine learning track of HPI: Mr. William Han, research programmer and Dr. Hanna Suominen, post-doctoral researcher, both join the algorithm development team.

Welcome 2009-10 Summer Scholars

Yesterday the NICTA summer scholars arrived at the Canberra Research Lab. For HPI, we have 6 scholars working on several projects. Inertial measurement, user interface design, 3D-radio models and (of course) the Foosball project are all up and running. Information about the projects can be found at the ANU site.

Of course, for now everyone is just finding their feet, more info soon.

New students, swim tests

This week we took on four "winter scholars", based on a competition run at the University of Canberra. They are between 2nd and 3rd year students working toward various health-related degrees; coaching, nutrition, sports-coaching. At the moment they are working on annotation of video taken pool-side, to test out a machine-learning approach to automatic training-log generation.
